GoCozumel Monthly Newsletter, January 2008

A personal look at the island, written by an American who has lived on Cozumel since May 2000.

Paying property taxes
If you live on Cozumel and own property, if you pay your property taxes and garbage pick up service in December you get a 25% discount.  If you wait until January there is a 20% discount.

Taxes are collected at the Palacio Municipal, and I’ve always brought the receipts from the year before. Just inside the doors to the left, they have had a table set up with computers and printers and they can look up the amount due for both your property tax and for garbage pick up service. They will print them out for you, and then you go upstairs to pay.
El Moro
This is a restaurant that has become well known over the years, but for those who haven’t been there yet it’s a bit difficult to find.

Go east on Juarez, past Ave. 65 and turn left at the street right before the big Pemex gas station. Turn right at the second intersection (look for a hand written El Moro sign) and then turn right again at the next corner. Look for the orange restaurant on the right.

Only open in the evenings. Their chicken mole is popular, I've often had the pork chops but last time there
I had chicken burritos and they were great.

Wonderful new restaurant
Kinta

Three of us had dinner at a new restaurant here called Kinta. All of us were very impressed. I asked one of them to write a review and here are his comments.

"Kinta is - on Ave 5 between Calle 2 and 4. There is a parking lot directly across the street. WOW! Fantastic food. Very small place with limited number of tables but very nice setting and the food was exquisite. Very nice use of colors and textures. I had pescado Kinta - a nice portion of Wahoo with corn salsa on a bed of cilantro rice. It was wonderful as was the crab appetizer. Then the desserts - tres leches bread pudding with banana and chocolate and a scoop of ice cream on top. WOW! For three people with wine and desserts, just over 1000 pesos. That is a really good deal. If you are on the island be sure to take this one in."

I agree, and the food was so good  I was back less than a week later. Don't miss this one. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 6pm to 11pm.

Cozumel Carnaval Parade 2008
As always, the Cozumel Carnaval parades are great fun. Beautiful costumes, music, dancing, amazing floats and fun for everyone. It’s very much a family event with children and adults. There will be lots of photos of the floats and the costumes online on our Carnaval 2008 page soon, but wanted to include just a few here.

There were 4 nights of Carnaval parades this year. The first parade was Saturday, January 26 and there was a parade on Sunday, Monday and the final parade on Tuesday, January 29.  In years past, I've only gone to the last parade but this year I went to  the first night and the last night. Enjoyed them both!

The parades are great to watch, and below are some photos of people having fun as the parade went by.

He’s Baaaack!
The bike riding iguana (photos in the December newsletter) was back at my house again, but this time he climbed from the bike up onto the wrought iron over a front window.

I'm glad to say, the window was closed.

EXCHANGE RATE: During January the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from 10.6 to 10.65 pesos to the U.S. dollar.

Gracias y hasta luego,
