Humane Society Art Auction - March 26
The Humane Society Annual Art Auction is coming up in March, on Friday the
26th. It begins at 7pm and will be held at The Gallery Istanbul, the same place as last year’s auction. Gallery Istanbul is located on the main oceanfront street (Ave. Rafael
Melgar) and it is on the street level underneath Hotel Casa Mexicana. Entrance fee is $10 US or 120 pesos. There will be live music and complimentary beer and wine served.
This year's event will be a bit different from years past. This year there will be 2 silent auctions and one live auction. The two silent auctions will have separate closing times. |

Great cheese
There are many different kinds of cheeses in Mexico, and one of my favorites is called
manchego. I use sliced manchego in sandwiches and cubes of manchego in salads or on crackers as a snack. It’s somewhat similar to Monterrey Jack. But there are so many other different kinds of cheese. In addition to manchego
there’s panela, oaxaca (known also as quesillo and a popular cheese for making quesadillas), asadero and chihuahua just to name a few.
There was one kind of cheese that is sometimes served crumbled up on salads and sometimes sprinkled on top of refried beans or guacamole. Although you can use one of several cheeses,
the one I wanted to find was dry, crumbly and quite salty. I tried buying several different types at the grocery stores here but never could find the right one…until now. It’s called
cotija, and it is a goat cheese that has a strong, salty flavor that reminds me of feta cheese. I’ve been told that it is called the parmesan of Mexico. Quite good! |

Making Beautiful Music
What a fascinating shop. At PAX you will find a selection of musical instruments indigenous to Mexico including guitars, marimbas, mandolins, charangas, harps, violins, drums, ukuleles and much more. |

|
 |
There is a collection of hundreds of wonderful handmade musical instruments from colonial times to the present. The charangas I found particularly interesting. They were used during colonial times, look somewhat similar to a guitar but they have double strings and the back of the instrument is made of an armadillo shell.
Each time I’ve been in with friends who were looking for a musical instrument the owner played several of them for
us and they also have a selection of CDs with traditional music.
The shop is at the corner of Av. 15 and Juarez downtown. |

New location for the vehicle ferry
Work is progressing on the new location for the vehicle ferry from Cozumel to the mainland. A road is being cut through from Ave. 30 to the oceanfront street south of town near the lighthouse and Playa
Caletita. As work progresses we’ll continue to take photos. |
