House for sale
In the popular Corpus Christi neighborhood, there is a 3 bedroom 3.5 bath home with a swimming pool for sale by the owner. In 2006, the owners enlarged and remodeled the house and it’s lovely.
November 20 – Mexico Revolution Day. This official Mexican holiday celebrates the Mexican Revolution of 1910. On this date, in the year 1910 the war to overthrow the dictator Porfirio Díaz, began. General Diaz had been an important military figure in Mexico, and he was in power for almost 30 years. During this time there was political stability and growth in many areas…new industries and railroads, but wealth was concentrated in the hands of only a few and the people of Mexico were not sharing in the benefits. They had no power to elect public officials or express their opinions.
In early 1909, Francisco Madero founded the Anti Reelectionist Party. Madero came from a wealthy family and had studied business in France as well as in the U.S. The Anti Reelectionist party designated him to run for President in the elections of 1910.
Diaz felt the pressure, and on June 6th he ordered that Madero be imprisoned, saying that he was “inciting rebellion and offending the authorities”. Madero patiently waited in prison until he learned that through fraud, Diaz had declared himself President of Mexico again. Although Madero had always been a pacifist, he escaped from prison and on November 20, 1910 he called for the overthow of the dictator, Diaz.
Dates for Carnaval 2008
The dates for Carnaval have been officially announced by the Carnaval Committee, and the main events are scheduled for January 23-30, 2008. The schedule of events includes the parades down Ave. Rafael
Melgar, the oceanfront street. They begin at 6pm each evening, and are scheduled for Sat. Jan. 26, Sun. Jan 27, Mon. Jan 28 and the final parade is Tues. Jan. 29.
After hearing a rustling noise right outside a window on the second floor,
I looked outside, then ran to get the camera. You can see a little of
the aluminum hurricane protectors and there is an air conditioner sitting on a
ledge. Sitting there on the ledge next to the air conditioner was one of the green iguanas that I see fairly
regularly going across my back wall.
This wasn't the first time I'd seen an iguana somewhere on the second
floor. Last month I decided to sit outside and get a little sun. I
opened the door to my second floor terrace and found that the iguana had
the same idea. He was already stretched out on the terrace sunning
himself, so I closed the door, deciding not to disturb him.
Pet Parade There is now a Sunday night
Pet Parade in the Main Plaza downtown Cozumel.
The Humane Society has adopted out one dog each week over the last month.
The hand made dog vests say "Adopt me" in Spanish and English. The dogs and cats are paraded in the Plaza each Sunday evening from 6:30 to 8:30pm and then returned to the Humane Society. Anyone interested in adopting the animals in the Parade are told to visit the Humane Society the next day and fill out an adoption form, make their donation and take their new friend home.
They do still need volunteers for Sunday evenings between 6.30pm and 8.30pm to help parade the animals. If you can help,
click on the link to the Humane Society and contact them. http://www.gocozumel.com/humane.htm
Store, restaurant/bar/store on the square
On the downtown square, I just recently discovered a store I had not been in
before and a restaurant/bar/store.
Mayan Pearl
The jewelry I saw here is a different that what I’ve seen in most Cozumel stores on the square. Enjoyed meeting Nelly too and talking to her. It’s a small store, but if you are walking down Ave. Juarez, Mayan Pearl is on the right, between Ave. 5 and Ave. 10.
Restaurant and Gift Shop
Also on the square downtown, but on Ave. 5 between Juarez and Calle 2 is a great shop and a restaurant/bar. It’s run by a delightful couple, Chad and
Klara. They do make wonderful margaritas and serve them in beautiful, hand painted
glasses. I’ve had lunch there a couple of times and I've bought quite a few of their hand painted glasses.
The restaurant/bar is called “Wet Wendy’s Margarita House”, and you can order your margarita frozen or on the
rocks and order lunch.. I enjoyed the chicken roll with orange caper sauce, the burrito was
BIG, and tasty. The fried machego cheese is yummy and the jalapeño poppers were
good…but they are VERY hot.
The glass you see at the left is one of the martini
shaped glasses I purchased, but I also bought a set of margarita glasses
and some wine glasses too. The restaurant/bar serves their
margaritas in these beautiful glasses, so after you've enjoyed your margarita,
take a look in their little store where they have a selection of glasses for sale.
They are open Monday-Saturday for lunch and they stop serving food about
5:30pm, but the bar is open later.
EXCHANGE RATE During November the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from
10.4 to 10.6 pesos to the U.S. dollar.
Gracias y hasta luego,
