A personal look at the island, written by an American who
has lived on Cozumel since May 2000. |
New oceanfront restaurant
|
On the oceanfront street right next door to Margaritaville, this new restaurant called Onsu is at the corner of Ave. Rafael Melgar and Calle
11. Nice setting, although when you sit outside by the ocean you can hear the music from
Margaritaville and that was a distraction. I did think the presentation was nice, and I liked my chipotle shrimp.
Asked a friend to write their review of this new restaurant and they said “Pretty good food. Friendly service and not overly expensive”.
Not rave reviews, but it's okay. |
Parking lot across from Chedraui
Not sure just what this parking lot will be used for or when it will
open, but it's on Calle 15 (now also called Ave. Xel Ha) across from the
big Chedraui grocery store and shopping mall. |

Bank ATM machines
Most tourist businesses here on Cozumel accept U.S. dollars as well
as pesos, but if you find you need
extra cash when you are here it's a good idea to have brought along a major credit card
or bank card with a PIN number so you can use it at an ATM machine. There are a number of ATM machines on
Cozumel. I normally go to the ones where I can swipe
my card instead of the ones that "eat" the card.
The exchange rate lately has been about 10.4 pesos to 1 US dollar, (fairly
close to 10 to 1) so when you are figuring how much cash you want,
remember that the machines will be giving you pesos. If you want
about $100 U.S. ask for 1,000 pesos. For each transaction, the
machines at the banks I've used charged me a total of 10 pesos (just
under $1 U.S.) to use the machine. Of course, then there is whatever that your bank or credit card will charge you.
Many of the small businesses on Cozumel can't afford to accept credit
cards, so it's always good to know that if you need additional cash
while you're here that there are plenty of ATM machines. There are
several banks down around the main square area with ATM machines, an ATM
at Chedraui grocery store and I do remember even seeing an ATM machine
at the airport. |

Neptune Dance Club

|
Neptune Disco was at the corner of Ave. Melgar and Calle
11 for many years. It has moved into a new building, just around the
corner and is now on Calle 11. |
Divers arch
On Ave. Rafael Melgar, the divers arch is really beautiful. Thanks to Deanna
and J.E. for posing there during their trip to Cozumel so that you could
see how large the arch is. You can see it on the waterfront street downtown (Ave. Rafael Melgar)
and it is north of the main square. |

Cell phone service
Yes, there is cell phone service on Cozumel, but whether or not your particular cell phone will work here will depend on a number of things. The
type and brand of cell phone you have, who your service provider is, and the type of service plan you have.
If being able to use your cell phone while on Cozumel is important to you, I
recommend you check with your service provider.
I don't know it it will help, but I have cell phone service here on Cozumel, I have a Nokia phone, my cell phone service is from TelCel on Cozumel and they
said the technology is
GSM.

Flowers
Saw some unusual yellow flowers the other day when I was on Ave. 5 just
south of downtown. It's one I had never seen before, so I
stopped to take a photo, and then a close up. |

North abrigo
Located only about a mile north of the airport road is the north
harbor. The sailboat tours leave from here as do many other boats. Most of the scuba diving boats are south of town at the
Caleta, since
most of the good dive sites are south of town in the marine park. |
Cozumel
Sunsets
Many times in the early evening I go up on my roof top area to watch
the sunset, and every time it's different, so I began taking
photos. |

EXCHANGE RATE
During February the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from
10.4 to 10.45 pesos to the U.S. dollar.
