2010

A personal look at the island, written by an American who
has lived on Cozumel since May 2000. |
| This year Carnaval week was Feb. 10-17 and the parades took place Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday, Feb. 13, 14 and 16. On the first night of the parade one of the floats had mechanical problems and that delayed the start of the parade. Normally, the parades start on time, however this is Mexico, and those of us living here understand that the starting time of an event can be rather flexible. We put our chairs in the grassy median on the main oceanfront street while we chatted and enjoyed hot dogs and french fries while we waited for the parade to begin. |

Dancing in the Streets
In addition to the parades, during the week of Carnaval many of the dance groups (called comparsas) that were participating in the parade were also performing in the streets on Cozumel. During Carnaval week at times there are streets that are closed off for a block or two so that the dancers can perform and neighbors come out to enjoy the entertainment. |

Snorkeling with Stingrays
On the main oceanfront street just about a mile south of the Chedraui grocery store there is an area where you can have an encounter with stingrays and even snorkel with them. I haven’t been myself, but I understand you begin in water that is only waist deep and that you can touch the stingrays and even feed them. |
 |
Then you can move to deeper water with the snorkeling equipment they provide and snorkel with the stingrays. There are lockers for your belongings. The last time we checked the times were at 7am and 3pm but I’d recommend checking a day or two in advance to make reservations and confirm the price. |

| EXCHANGE RATE:
During February 2010 the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the
local banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from 12.2 to
12.5 pesos to the U.S. dollar.
Gracias y hasta luego,
