Hydroponic tomatoes
These tomatoes are marvelous and definitely worth the short drive to get them. They are not only delicious, but they seem to last for weeks. You’d think that tomatoes this good would cost more than tomatoes at the grocery store, but I’ve found that the price per kilo is
less than the price at either Mega or Chedraui. |
| If I understand correctly, these tomatoes are not grown year round. They are available from January through June and then in July the vines are cut down and new seeds are planted. By November the plants are large enough to be put back in the greenhouse and by January
the tomatoes are ready.
To buy these tomatoes you drive out the transversal road. Not too far out of town the median in the road (with street lights) ends and you will go over two “topes” (speed bumps) in the road that are close together. At that point you will see some signs on the road that goes to the left. One is a sign for an equestrian school. Turn left at that sign and go less than a ½ kilometer down the road. |
| Look for a house on the left that has a small sign saying “Rancho Maven”. From time to time I have seen a sign saying “Vende
tomate” to let you know that they sell tomatoes here, but more often than not the sign has been down. Turn into the property,
park and then go to the back door of the house. They only speak Spanish, but will do
their best to understand how many tomatoes you wish to buy. A kilo is about 2.2 pounds and since these tomatoes last a good while, I
normally buy a kilo at a time. |

Italian Coffee Company
New, in the shopping center at the corner of Ave. 30 and Calle 1 (with Burger King on the corner) is a great coffee shop. Their Cappuccino Frappe is wonderful! I normally tell them not to put the whipped cream or “sprinkles” on top as I like it better without it. The shop also does sell sandwiches and salads but I haven’t tried those yet. |

Motorcycle races, March 27 and 28 |
|
On Saturday and Sunday, March 27 and 28 there were ¼ mile motorcycle races held on Cozumel. Quite a turn out for the practice runs on Saturday and for the races on Sunday. The new, 2 lane road, Calle 39 that runs from the south end of Ave.
30 to Ave. 65 was blocked off and the races were held there. |

Photos in the main square
There has been a stunning collection of underwater photos on display in the downtown square. I don’t know how much longer it will be there, but some of the photos are quite beautiful. |
