GoCozumel Monthly Newsletter, June
2007
Our newsletter is a personal look at the island, written by an American
who moved to Cozumel in May 2000.
We do talk about stores, restaurants and other things on
Cozumel that we see and things that
we enjoy, but we do not accept advertising in our newsletters.
July 4 celebration
With the blessing and cooperation of the Cozumel Department. of Tourism, volunteers have planned special activities to acquaint the people of Cozumel with different customs of many of the English speaking guests here on the island, so they have some insight into American culture.
Their next event is for the 4th of July and it will begin at 7 pm in Benito Juarez Park (the main square at the center of town). Permission has even been granted for fireworks !!! There will be a Dance Presentation and American music for dancing and singing. They will be giving away American flags and patriotic pin wheels to the kids and everyone on the island is invited!

Los Cincos Soles
After living on Cozumel for over 7 years, this is still one of my favorite stores on the island and I normally stop by about once every 4-6 weeks. They have beautiful
decorations, silver jewelry and souvenir items, a Boutique with some lovely ladies fashions, and then there is the restaurant, Pancho’s Backyard. |
|
To shop, generally I like to go down on Sundays to shop as there are normally not any cruise ships on Sunday. Regular hours for the store are 8am to 8pm Monday-Saturday, and on Sunday 11am to 4pm. |
|
For Pancho’s Backyard, their hours Monday-Saturday 10am to 11pm and on Sunday, 5pm to 11pm. When I go for lunch it can be crowded at noon so I will wait and go at 1:30 or 2pm when I can sit and enjoy a nice lunch. It’s a lovely place for dinner in the evening too and the food is quite good.
And then there are the margaritas! I do enjoy them....but they are
strong! You can get a regular size or the large size. I call it
"grande" but I've heard it called the "fish bowl". |

|
| For lunch, I've gotten the Mexican
platter several times and shared it with a friend. It's a good way to
sample a lot of different flavors. The chimichangas are good too
and so are the quesadillas. Actually, everything I've had at Pancho's
has been good. For dinner, one of my favorites is the chicken
breast stuffed with spinach, cheese and almonds and I've tried both
kinds of fish and they were excellent too. |
Squash courts
To reach the squash courts, take Ave. Juarez east, away from the ocean. Go past Av. 65 (the street signs also will also call this Av. 8 de Octubre) and when you get to Av. 75 (the Pemex gas station is on the left, turn left just before the gas station. If you go one block you will see the squash courts on the corner to your left. |
 |
Piratas Restaurant
Seems that I never find time to go to all of the restaurants, but even if I haven’t been there I will be mentioning some restaurants in the newsletter. Piratas is about 5 miles south of town. It is after the Fiesta Americana Hotel and less than a mile before you get to the entrance to Chankanaab National Park. |
Cozumel for the Holidays
Cozumel is a popular destination during the holidays as the weather is
normally so terrific here then. If you're considering a trip to Cozumel for Thanksgiving, Christmas or
New Years, although many vacation rentals book as much as a year in
advance, there are still some beautiful vacation homes and condos
available for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years week.
Accommodations at privately owned vacation apartments begin as low as
$300/wk (2 guests-Thanksgiving week) but if you want a more luxurious
setting with a swimming pool or you want to be oceanfront there are many
other options. While available, you can find Thanksgiving week
rates this year as low as $840/wk for a 2 bedrooms private vacation home
with a private swimming pool (up to 4 guests) and a 3 bedroom with a
private pool from $1,000/wk.
For Christmas or New Years week , 3 bedroom private homes with a
swimming pool begin at $1,695/wk and if you have a larger group, for 16
guests there's an 8 bedroom luxury oceanfront condo for $7,150/wk. |
Hungry for fish!
I was hungry for fresh fish, and I don’t think you can get fresher than this, or any easier. I stopped Conchita del Caribe on Ave. 65 the other day to pick up something to take home. I decided that I what I was really hungry for was fried fish. They have coolers filled with ice and fresh fish, so I picked the fish I wanted and had them fry it for me while I waited. Their fried fish (pescado frito) as take out (para llevar) is only 80 pesos per kilo (a kilo is 2.2 pounds) and that is about $8 U.S |

|
|
They deep fried it whole for me while I waited and it only took about 15 minutes. Along with the fish they included rice, onions and wedges of lime. Since the fish I selected was less than a kilo my total cost was 60 pesos, about $6. U.S. I had half of the fish for lunch and the rest for dinner. I was just wonderful, and what a bargain. |
 |
Friends are inviting friends
In the April newsletter, I had photos of a cat that like to sit on my front patio and one that likes to sit on the wall under the palapa on the back patio. Well, it seems they have been inviting
friends to join them. I’ve seen up to 3 cats at a time on the lounge chair on the front patio, but
I wasn’t able to get a photo of all 3 of them but I did catch a photo with 2 of them. |
|
The grey and white cat to the left in the photo is my most regular visitor.
She is there almost every morning and comes at various times during the
day. She is a rather shy cat and wary of people, but when I brought the fried fish home for lunch the other day she forgot all about any
fears she had and was right on my heels trying to follow me into the house. |

EXCHANGE RATE
During June, the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from
10.4 to 10.45 pesos to the U.S. dollar.
Gracias y hasta luego,
