GoCozumel Monthly Newsletter, July  2009

Our newsletter is a personal look at the island, written by an American
who moved to Cozumel in May 2000.

Island Spa has a new owner

The Island Spa on Calle 19 has a new owner. Clare Widdicombe is moving back to London, and the new Spa owner is Carole Crespin. Carole is a US licensed hair designer with 26 years of experience. She started her career in Boulder, Colorado and some credits to her name include photo shoots for hair magazines and books, hair show platform performance, in-salon teaching and numerous awards at competitions in hair cutting and styling.

Carole has lived in Cozumel for 12 years and during that time worked as a manager in Jewelry retail sales and as a part-time hairstylist.

She is looking forward to continuing to offer the same high level of personal attention and quality service that Island Spa has always offered the last seven years. Carole is available for appointments and can be reached at the same telephone number and email address that Island Spa has always had. The Island Spa in on Calle 19, only 1 ½ blocks from the oceanfront street, Ave. Rafael Melgar.

Humane Society Sunset Cruise, Saturday, August 1
There is Sunset Cruise to benefit the Cozumel Humane Society on Saturday, August 1. As before, thanks to the generosity of Fury Catamaran, all the money collected will go to help the animals. The time to meet at the main passenger ferry pier downtown is 5:00 pm with departure at 5:30pm sharp, and they will sail for about 2 and a half hours. Tickets are $20 US or $250 pesos per person, and it includes all the beer and margaritas you could want, plus snacks donated by La Cocay and Rock'n Java.

This is normally very popular so I’d suggest getting tickets in advance. They are now for sale at La Cocay (Calle 8), American Discount Drugstore (Calle 3 near the oceanfront street), Rock'n Java (on the oceanfront street), and Funky Bazaar, a new little store on Calle 15 (also called Xel-Ha) right by the Corpus Christi park. Funky Bazaar is only open in the evenings from 5-9pm.

Store on the main plaza
I didn’t see any name on this store, but I did take photos as I found a number of things that I really liked there. It’s in the main square downtown. If you are standing by the big clock tower, walk to your right and at the next corner turn left. This store is not in the first group of stores in the building painted yellow, but just after that.

Another large grocery store
Several months ago the grocery store on Ave. 30 called Super Maz was bought by the Soriana grocery chain. I had been to a Soriana store in Playa del Carmen and it was wonderful, so I am looking forward to seeing the changes. Soriana is on Ave. 30 between Calle 6 and Calle 8 and it is now much larger than the original grocery store.

Hungarian Food and Jazz Festival Saturday August the 8th
The 4th annual Hungarian Food and Jazz Festival will be at Wet Wendy’s Margarita House, downtown in the main plaza. You should make your reservations in advance. Wet Wendy’s Margarita House is in the maid square. If you are standing by the main clock tower with your back to the ocean, go to the left and about ¾ of the way down that block Wet Wendy’s Margarita House is on the left.

EXCHANGE RATE

During July, the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from 12.6 to 13 pesos to the U.S. dollar.

Gracias y hasta luego,
