GoCozumel Newsletter, August 2009
Our newsletter is a personal look at the island, written by an American
who moved to Cozumel in May 2000.
Mexican Independence Day
 |
Coming up in September the celebration of Mexican Independence Day.
It was on September 16th in 1810 when Miguel Hidalgo, a Catholic priest in the village of Dolores delivered a speech now called El Grito de Dolores. A movement toward Mexican independence from centuries of Spanish rule had already been in progress, (particularly since Napoleon invaded Spain in 1808) but Hidalgos call to action in the pre-dawn hours of September 16, 1810 are said to be what actually began the Mexican War of Independence a war that lasted 10 years. |
Its been reported that among his words were
"Mexicanos, Viva Mexico" and "Viva la Independencia!" Independence Day celebrations all over Mexico begin at 11pm the night of September 15th and continue on September 16th.
Here on Cozumel there are usually fireworks that began late on the evening of the 15th and
I can go up on my roof about 11pm to watch. Then, on the 16th there is usually a parade.
There are often carnival rides in the evening set up in the area across from the Palacio
Municipal, where the new park has been built at the corner or the
oceanfront street (Melgar) and Calle 11 (Ave. Andres. Q. Roo). |
Compucentro has moved
 |
The computer store that used to be on Calle 11 near the corner of Ave. 5 has now moved. They are open on Ave. 30 at the corner of Calle 5. For those of you who are familiar with Cozumel, that’s across the street from the old location of Ace Hardware. There used to be a pharmacy at that location, but Compucentro is now there. |
How does your
garden grow? |
In Cozumel, it grows quite well. Yes, there is
parsley, sage, rosemary & thyme. In addition there is dill, cilantro, oregano, marjoram, epizote, mint, lettuce, arugula,
tomatoes and loads of basil. Every day I water the plants in the morning and in the afternoon I gather goodies from the garden for a salad. The lettuce is a bit difficult to grow and I understand it does better in a bit cooler climate, but I’m experimenting with different locations to find just the right spot where it gets enough sun but not too much. |

Boxing on Cozumel
On Saturday, Aug. 15 there was boxing on Cozumel in the new park at the corner of Ave. Rafael Melgar (the oceanfront street) and Calle 11. I was there and would estimate somewhere between 1,500 to 2,000 people attended. It must have taken a couple of days to prepare as they had to erect the raised area with the boxing ring and lighting, build the bleachers, prepare the sound system, construct the “fencing” around the area and put out the chairs for floor
seating. |

|
|
It all began at 7pm and there were quite a few undercard bouts before the main
event so while it was still light enough I took photos.
I hope I have all the details correct, but what I
understood was that the main event was the amateur boxing championship, super flyweight division match between #1 ranked Juan Carlos Reveco from Argentina and #5 ranked Francisco
“La Chiquita” Rosas from Mexico. It was 12 rounds and I thought they were pretty evenly matched. Quite a good fight. The crowd was cheering for “Chiquita” and they were not pleased when the winner and new champion was announced as Juan Carlos Reveco from Argentina. |

Mama Linda Restaurant
There is a new restaurant called Mama Linda that opened recently. It is on Ave. 25 between Calle 2 and Calle 4 and there is room for a few cars to park right in front I did have dinner there with friends a couple of weeks ago and it was enjoyable. The margaritas were quite good and they were also very strong! |

|
| The décor is tropical and the palapa roof is tall and impressive. I have been told that they are planning to have live music with a rock band on Friday and Saturday nights from 8:30 to 11:30pm. If you want a quiet dinner you might try another night but if you enjoy live music stop by on Friday or Saturday nights. |
