GoCozumel Newsletter, September  2010

A personal look at the island, written by an American  who moved to Cozumel in May 2000.

There are some great restaurants on Cozumel. You can find everything from local restaurants with low prices, take out only, a great ice cream store and restaurants with full service. I noticed the other day how many restaurants and take out places there are on Ave. 30 so I decided that this month I'd feature some of the eateries Ave. 30.

I’ll start south on Ave. 30 and list some of those going from south to north.

Beginning at the corner of Ave. 30 and Calle 21 there is the Michoacan Ice Cream store. My favorite flavor is mango but since mangos are seasonal they don’t have it year round. Lots of other delicious flavors including some unusual ones like mint/grape

Las Tortugas Restaurant is one block north at the corner of Ave. 30 and Calle 19. They have a local menu and some strong margaritas.

Moving to the north is the hamburger shop called Bailongo between Calle 15 and Calle 17 that advertises 2 grilled burgers for 30 pesos (under $3 U.S). They are only open in the evening.

At the corner of Ave. 30 and Xel Ha (Xel Ha is also called Calle 15) there a Super Hits restaurant and across the street, Los Tres Patos. Los Tres Patos is open until noon and there is no place to sit down but you can stand up at the counter and grab a bite or take it with you.

Continue north on Ave. 30 (Ave. 30 is also called Joaquin Caldwell) and between Calle 5 and Calle 3 there is Asadero del Pollo for delicious grilled chicken. Normally it is take out, but I’ve seen a couple of small tables inside. When I plan to buy chicken here I normally try to go before 3pm as I've learned that when they run out of chicken for the day they close.

At the corner of Ave. 30 and Rosado Salas there are 3 places…Domino’s Pizza, ParriPollo and another SuperHits

Just one block later at the corner of Ave. 30 and Calle 1 there is a very large Burger King and it even has a drive thru.

As you go north on Ave. 30 you cross over Ave. Juarez and there is a San Francisco grocery store on the left and on the right is El Pique Taqueria between Juarez and Calle 2.  El Pique is open in the evening so the photo shows it closed, but I recommend taking the time to stop by one evening. It’s worth a trip there. The menu is painted on the back wall.

Between Calle 2 and Calle 4 as you head north is Parilla Mission on the left, and then to the right, on the corner of Calle 4 there are two places. One has rotisserie chicken to take out (El Triumfo) and the other is now called Joliz. They both have take out but in the past the one that is now called Joliz had a couple of tables if you’d like to sit down.

Then, on Ave. 30 between Calle 12 and Calle 14 there is a restaurant called Molcajetes.

EXCHANGE RATE
During September the exchange rate that we saw at the money exchanges and the banks when changing dollars into pesos on Cozumel varied from 11.5 to 11.8 pesos to the U.S. dollar.
