A History of Jesus es Rey, a Bible Believing Church

The first services of the non-denominational church Jesus es Rey were held on May 13, 2004 by Pastor Diego Traconis. For 6 years this Bible Believing church held their services in a rented building at the corner of Ave. 65 and Morelos and during that time the congregation grew. In addition to their Thursday and Sunday evening services at 6pm in Spanish, a few years ago Pastor Diego responded to a request by a number of English speaking residents of Cozumel and added a service in English at 10am each Sunday morning.

As the church grew, the Sunday night services became very crowded, and Pastor Diego began searching for land the church could buy where they could have their own building. After months of looking, they took the first few steps of what looked like an impossible dream when they found an excellent piece of land for sale on Calle 39 near the corner of Ave. 95 Bis. In November, 2009, the church made a commitment to purchase the land, and then began the hard work to achieve their dream.

As a non-denominational church, there were no funds or financial assistance from affiliated churches. The monthly utilities and rent where church services has been held for 6 years were high enough that Jesus es Rey was not able to set aside funds toward the purchase of land or construction of a building. Often any funds the church had were used for outreach missions to help those in the poorest areas of Cozumel and to provide aid for people in parts of the mainland that desperately needed help. So how in the world would this new building ever become a reality? It was going to take a miracle.
To say that the congregation of Jesus es Rey is not wealthy is an understatement. Many families are struggling make ends meet, but they have faith and they are hard workers. Families pledged what they could and many made a commitment to volunteer to help. Once the land was purchased, church members began by first cleaning the land of all the trees and bushes. They worked with machetes while fighting off the mosquitoes.

Once the land was cleared they needed a great deal of fill and it took load after load of gravel, rocks and dirt. Many members with a knowledge of plumbing, masonry and electrical work volunteered their services whenever they could. It was exhausting work, and through the spring and then heat of the summer of 2010 the work continued.

Others in the church helped by providing lunch for the volunteers. Several groups of women helped to raise funds by cooking and selling lunch in their local neighborhoods. There was even a time when volunteer workers from another Cozumel church came to assist them. Funds were always short, but time and time again just when all the funds had run out, the church was blessed with enough donations to keep the work progressing.
It was a slow process since most of the work was performed by church members in what little spare time they had. Slowly the outer walls of the church began to go up.

Now and then they had the use of a concrete mixer, but often the concrete had to be mixed on the ground, the old fashioned way. The building progressed and in August it was time to pour the roof. It’s important that the concrete used in a roof be the right mix and that it is all poured at the same time, so the decision was made to bring in one of the large concrete trucks to pour the concrete for the roof. Workers were up on the roof spreading the mixture as it was poured.

Although the new church is still not completely finished, services have been held at the new location since September, 2010. Little by little, the final work will be done when there are funds available to purchase the materials needed.

There is still a long way to go before the new church is entirely finished, but because of the faith and hard work of church members, the miracle of the new church for Jesus es Rey is a reality.

You are invited to join us for church services in English. They are held every Sunday morning at 10am at the new Jesus es Rey Church, Calle 39 near the corner of Ave. 95 Bis.
